Have You Ever Really Stopped And Realized With Modern Technology Your Lives Are Filled With Depressing News?

As with many and obviously since I run a news site, I wake up in the morning and check the news for what happened overnight around the globe.

It dawned on me this morning that to be blunt ,the worse the news is the more people get sucked into it. Let me give you the example from this morning. These are some headlines from both cnn and foxnews.

These are the headlines to start the day. Depressing and sad. I have learned to be immune to it at this point but just this morning I was like wow this is what the world starts with everyday..with this is it any wonder why people are so irritable and bitchy these days

  1. The comment by Anonymous at 10:43 AM is indeed correct. Since newspapers and, later, radio and television have found out, good news does not sell papers or ad time. Bad news – sensational news – always does. Always has, always will. It’s sad and somewhat sick, but positive news – save a local team winning a championship or a profound moment in the history of mankind (the Moon landings, the end of a war, etc.) does not generate high ratings or newsstand sales. Not only does, “if it bleeds, it leads” perfectly sum up the economics of the media business (news and entertainment as well), just remember the alleged quote from William Randolph Hearst about the potential war in Cuba back at the turn of the 20th century. When his illustrator Frederic Remington reported from Cuba in 1896 that all was quiet and he wanted to come home, Hearst allegedly told him, “Please remain. You provide the pictures, and I’ll provide the war.” Sensational stories and headlines mean big money for media companies. Hearst knew that back at the beginning of the 20th century. It’s still true today.

  2. FOX is the only network I watch, but instead of hours I’ve cut back to minutes. After years I finally realized how depressing it was. Like a soap opera you can skip or miss it for days and catch up in minutes. Turn it on and it’s likely to be the same story day after day, week after week. It seems lately they are going to a commercial too often for me to hang in with them. Just my humble observation. Happy Fathers Day!
